There are so many people on Etsy who make their own jewelry and sell it. When I first started seeing all of the beautiful things people made with their own two hands, I couldn’t believe it. I didn’t understand how they knew how to do it. As you’ve probably found out from perusing the web, there are so many tutorials online that help you be just like these shop owners! Just follow the steps and you’ll quickly become a mastermind at making things. And, it’s so much fun, too!
I’ve come up with five DIY tutorials for beginners that are trendy and fun and that will teach you tons; and, I admit they can be a little pricey for the supplies, but once you have them, you won’t have to buy them again and you’ll continue to be able to make yourself the jewelry that YOU want (or be a good friend and give out surprise handmade gifts).
1. Wire-Wrapped Rings
The great thing about wire wrapping is that you can basically wire-wrap anything and turn it into any type of jewelry. From wire-wrapped beads that are turned into rings, to crystals that are turned into pendants. The options are endless.
There are some intricate wire-wrapped jewelry on the internet that may look a little daunting, but I’ve found a great tutorial that will bring you through each step to make a wire-wrapped crystal ring. The best part is the customization- You can pick which color wire you like best and which crystal gives you the best vibes or is prettiest!

2. Metal Stamping
Metal stamping is a perfect way to personalize gifts for special occasions (or for those times you’re feeling giving and think your friends need something sweet to let them know how much they mean to you). You can use stamps to write customized messages into metal that you then turn into a pendant for a necklace or into a bracelet. It’s probably the cutest thing you could do for someone. Besides letters, there are also object/image stamps you can buy, too! So, you could have a necklace that said “You are my moon” with a moon stamped next to it. Check out a tutorial here.
3. Resin Jewelry
Making pendants out of resin is amazing because you can be a little kid and make something cool (with a parent’s help while dealing with the resin) but also be an adult and make something just as cool. You can’t go wrong! You can take a mold such as a circle, put some googly eyes in it, or swirled paint or basically anything, and then pour liquid resin on top, and once it dries you’ll pop the pendant out of the resin and voila!
4. Beaded Necklace
Jewelry-making is so rad because you can make it is intricate as you want, and depending on what types of beads you use, you can turn it into any style that works for you. One of the coolest blogs ever, A Beautiful Mess, has made a tutorial on how to make a simple beaded necklace. Personally I think its a little more in-depth than “simple,” but I can’t deny that it’s awesome, especially for the choice of stone beads!
5. Clay Earrings
DIY-ers are finally finding out the versatility of clay. There are SO many amazing ways you can use it for jewelry. You can make so many cute little objects like cacti and apply them to an earring post, or you can create a marbled effect instead (like in the tutorial here). What’s great about this material is that it’s relatively cheap to use. You don’t have to buy the clay-specific knives or the “cookie cutters;” instead, you can just use tools at home. Improvise! The DIY tutorials for clay jewelry are never ending, so go find more!
If you’re lovin’ these tutorials, think about all of the other things you can make by yourself for yourself! DIY jewelry is great because you know for a fact that no one else is going to have what you do. Or, if you want to match your friends, you can make a pair of twin necklaces and be the envy of everyone! The options on how to use these materials are never-ending, just think outside the box.
