There are many different uses for essential oils and there are many different kinds of essential oils. Most people don’t know beneficial these oils are. So today I want to share with you how you can use some of these oils to help with your allergies – sometimes Zyrtec doesn’t cut it! What are allergies? Allergies are the abnormal reaction the immune system has when it’s introduced to a foreign substance or a substance it doesn’t agree with. These substances can be air born or inhaled toxins. I, myself and like most Americans suffer from allergies all year around. If this is you too, you may be wondering what other remedies you can do to help fight these allergies without taking Benedryl. Well, you’ve come to the right place my friend, you’ve come to the right place.
If you’re planning to start using essential oils for your allergies you need to first think about buying a diffuser or a humidifier. This is not the only method used to help you fight off an allergic reaction but it is the most common. You can find a good one at Walmart for a decent price. Having been an avid essential oil user I find it’s best to purchase your oils online in bulk. If however, you find yourself wanting to run to the store and grab a small diffuser and a couple basic oils after reading you can do that too! You can always find the most basic essential oils at your local grocery store usually by the vitamins. Most of the oils I’m going to share with you have a variety of uses so they’re good to keep around your home.
Here are my top three oils for allergies:
- Eucalyptus Oil
For those of you who aren’t familiar with the word Eucalyptus chances are you’ve come across it a time or two. It smells of spearmint and peace of mind. And it is the most popular thing selling at bath and body work. Eucalyptus contains ingredients such as citronella which has anti-inflammatory effects. It also works as an expectorant (meaning to expel or banish) cleansing the body of harmful toxins and microorganisms that are acting as allergens.
Remedy: For light allergies apply topical to chest, temples, & bottom of the nose, add five to ten drops to a nice hot bath, or drop about five drops in the humidifier and let it works its magic. For congestion relief soak a washcloth in hot water and add five drops, ring out the towel and place it on your head breathing deeply for five to ten minutes.
- Lemon Oil
Without the aid of alcohol or bleach, lemon oil can disinfect your home. It will remove bacteria and pollutants keeping your air clean while reducing the chances of air born allergies such as pollen, dust, or mold. Several studies have shown that lemon essential oil actually inhibits the growth of bacteria and helps to boost your immune system.
Remedy: Add five drops to your laundry detergent (liquid or powder.) One to two drops in your water to help balance your PH.
- Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil is my favorite essential oil for many reasons. One is its ability to do almost everything! If you are getting into essential oils Tea Tree oil is definitely a must have. Diffusing this oil in your home will kill mold, bacteria, and fungi. With its powerful anti-bacterial properties it can be used topically on the skin to kill bacteria. (If you plan to use this oil topically please be aware that it is a very strong oil and can cause skin irritation to sensitive skin.) It can also be used as a household cleaner along with lemon oil to eliminate allergens.
Remedy: Fill an empty spray bottle with water, add five drops of Tea Tree oil and five drops of lemon oil for a household cleaner. If using topically applied to gauze first. For people with sensitive skin using topically dilute first as this oil is very powerful.
